In a New York Times review of Guillermo Klein’s 2009 CD Una Nave, Ben Ratliff wrote: “His jazz, if you want to call it that, is built from the ground up, starting with ideas about instrumentation, then rhythm, then harmony, then gesture. In one of his large ensemble sets, there could be brass choirs, Cuban rhythm, fugue–like passages, talking, whistling, mechanical repetitions over a groove, and bits of aerated rock.” The story of Guillermo Klein y Los Guachos began at Berklee College of Music in Boston, where Klein studied composition and piano during the early 1990s. There, he met a number of sympathetic musicians with whom he created this large ensemble, which continued to perform periodically following his move to New York City. Today, the members of Los Guachos have been working together for more than twenty years, have beome some of the most in demand musicians in the world, and have developed a familial spirit of camaraderie – more hermanos than band mates. “There’s a lot of care from the band on every note and I like the sound very much,” says Guillermo Klein. “We’ve been playing for over twenty years now and I can feel that.”
