Ravi Coltrane "The Void"

  • Jazz Standard 116 East 27th Street New York, NY, 10016 United States (map)

Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm nightly, with an additional 11:30pm set on Saturday only:

Over the course of a career now in its third decade, Ravi Coltrane has worked as a sideman with such leaders as Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, and Geri Allen; recorded six noteworthy albums as a leader, and founded the independent record label RKM. In his last appearance at Jazz Standard, the artist staged an “invitational” series of musical collaborations; this week, he brings a new sextet to the stand for five celebratory nights of creative improvisation. “Playing with consistent seriousness of intent but also with plenty of fire, Coltrane led his quartet in a performance that had no throwaway moments, no nonchalant phrasings, and scant moments of relaxation. Instead, in each piece Coltrane made succinct and often–profound points…Regardless of how explosively he may be playing or how remote his harmonic journeys may become, the sheer luster of his sound and the nimbleness of his technique play gently on the ear.” – Chicago Tribune.
