Celebrating its 12th year in 2016, SFJAZZ’s resident all–star ensemble celebrates its latest recording The Music of Michael Jackson & Original Compositions. The new album presents sparkling new arrangements of music by the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, alongside freshly minted compositions by the band. Jackson’s celebrity burned so brightly it often obscured the brilliance of his musical mind, a situation that’s only grown more pronounced since his death in 2009. The SFJAZZ Collective puts the spotlight back where it belongs, interpreting lesser–known gems as well as epochal hits from his diverse and endlessly inventive songbook. As with its earlier investigation of Stevie Wonder’s musical treasure trove on the album Live in New York 2011, recorded in performance at Jazz Standard, the Collective brings the same incisive lyricism, harmonic insight and rhythmic energy to well-crafted pop tunes as to material conceived for jazz settings. “Whatever it is, the SFJAZZ Collective idea really works where other all-star bands have failed. They’ve created a setting where the brilliance of every player comes through in harmony with the others.” (Kansas City Star)
