Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm nightly:
For decades after his death in 1988, the only way to perform Gil Evans’ music was through (often inaccurate) transcriptions. But the magic of Evans’ writing lies in the details – his use of harmony, his unique approach to orchestration and instrumentation, and his singularly detailed rhythmic and notational structure. After years of painstaking research, countless hours of preparation, and with full support from the Evans family, Ryan Truesdell and the Gil Evans Project have made it possible, for the first time, to perform Gil’s music in its purest form, directly from his manuscripts. The engagement serves as a homecoming of sorts, for in 2016, the ensemble’s latest record,Lines of Color (Blue Note/ArtistShare), which was recorded live on the Jazz Standard stage, was nominated for a GRAMMY Award in the Best Large Jazz Ensemble category! “The Gil Evans Project…brings painstaking precision to its task but also an air of unburdened pleasure. Its driving purpose isn’t re–enactment so much as revelation, which helps guard against the pull of nostalgia. That’s tantalizingly rare in the jazz repertory game.” (The New York Times)
