Trumpeter Dave Douglas’ long–running quintet is simply one of the best working bands in jazz today, featuring Jon Irabagon (saxophones), Matt Mitchell (piano), Linda Oh (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums). Their new albumBrazen Heart (released 10/2 through Douglas’ Greenleaf Music) is a deeply–felt remembrance of Douglas’ brother, with new material that emerged from the quintet’s extensive travels around the United States and Europe in Douglas’ 50th birthday year. Brazen Heart features such outstanding new original compositions as “Lone Wolf” and “Pyrrhic Apology” as well as the group’s interpretation of the spirituals “Deep River” and “There Is A Balm In Gilead.” “I feel like every time you play it’s an opportunity to grow and find some new areas to play in.” says Douglas. “With this band in particular, the way everyone plays keeps me on my toes as a composer. It has to do with how you construct the conversation and how people take part in that conversation.”
