The 2015 Cole Porter Fellow in Jazz of the American Pianist Association, New Orleans native Sullivan Fortner Jr. has already made his mark on the contemporary music scene as a member of the touring bands of Stefon Harris, Christian Scott, and Roy Hargrove. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and completed his Master’s degree at Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Jason Moran, and Phil Markowitz. Other credits include Donald Harrison, Nicholas Payton, Billy Hart, Gary Bartz, and Dave Liebman, among many others. Tonight he comes to Jazz Standard to celebrate his debut CD on Impulse Records,Aria, a mix of finely curated standards and originals that highlight not only Fortner, but his band of some of the finest young musicians in New York.
