It’s been a decade since Nir Felder arrived in New York in 2006 and quickly became one of the city’s most sought–after sideman, performing and/or recording with (among others) Terri Lyne Carrington, Esperanza Spalding, Stanley Clarke, Jack DeJohnette, and Meshell Ndegeocello. The guitarist formed his own group in 2010, with which he’s since appeared regularly in NYC clubs and on the European festival circuit; and the following year released Golden Age (Sony/OKeh), a thematically ambitious album that blurred the lines between improvisational jazz and the rock, hip–hop, and pop music Felder grew up on. “Felder gets to show off his amazing chops [but]Golden Age is more about songs than solos…The off-center chords and steady beat of opener ‘Lights’ could make you think of Sonic Youth in a quieter moment. But the album gains heft and texture: the gradual build of ‘Code,’ the slow–moving chords and nervous drum chatter in ‘Sketch 2,’ the undulating riff of ‘Before the Tsars.’” (Jon Garelick, BostonGlobe.com, 1.28.2014)
