Jazztopad Festival Presents: Obara International Quartet

  • Jazz Standard 116 East 27th Street New York, NY, 10016 United States (map)

Shows at 7:30pm & 9:30pm:

Polish saxophonist and composer Maciej Obara burst onto the international jazz scene after winning the Bielska Zadymka Jazz Contest in 2006 for his album Message from Oyaho. His International Quartet features Polish countryman Dominik Wania on piano alongside two of Norway’s most in–demand jazz players, bassist Ole Morten Vagan and drummer Gard Nilssen. Reviewing a London performance by the group for The Guardian, John Fordham wrote: “Obara displayed an inventiveness and stamina that reminded me of the veteran improv master Lee Konitz. Wania, too, is a real find – a superb improviser with the confidence to toy with an audience's patience…Obara's is by inclination a free–jazz group, but it's one with discipline and a sense of narrative shape.”
